Research Interests

  • I collaborate with scientists both in the US and internationally (Denmark, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Norway, etc.).  I have a broad interest in the morphology, physiology and bionomics of the arthropods in general. My areas of research interest include many taxa, including Diptera (Ceratopogonidae, Psychodidae, Tabanidae, and Tachinidae), Lepidoptera (Noctuidae and Tortricidae) and Hymenoptera (Chalcidoidea), including the parasitoids of moths.  I conduct research on the biology, behavior, and population dynamics of various arthropods impacting on man, animals, forest health and pollination biology.  My research includes developing methods and techniques to determine various population parameters, e.g., species present, seasonal incidence, distribution of breeding and resting sites, survival of developmental stages, reproductive strategies, dispersal and migration patterns, age structure of natural populations, and identification of the various factors that determine species abundance and distribution.
  • My research focuses on the biology, systematics, behavior, ecology and ultrastructure of insects and other arthropods.  While arthropods are my principal research interest, I have also worked with the arthropods associated with bats and pines.  Many of my research projects (and those of my students) are strongly field-oriented and carried out in the Coastal Plain of Georgia.
  • In collaboration with John D. Spooner of the University of South Carolina - Aiken, SC, July 1998 we began a study of the abundance and distribution in the arthropods of the Broxton Rocks Nature Preserve (Coffee County, GA).  This 2,000-hectare refuge in south Georgia is a unique site with numerous sandstone outcrops.  The site is home to a number of threatened and endangered species of plants and animals, and is under the stewardship of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) . However, little is known of the species of arthropods that are present at the site.  We are particularly interested obtaining a better understanding of the species of arthropods (e.g., oribatid mites, Diptera, Coleoptera, etc.) associated with the endangered species of plants.
  • Beginning Spring 1999, in collaboration with George A. Rogers (GSU) and Frankie Snow (South Georgia College, Douglas) - we began examining the plant-insect interactions of the insect/ arthropod pollinators of the many threatened or endangered species of plants at Broxton Rocks NP.
  • In collaboration with Wayne A. Berisford, Dept. of Entomology, University of Georgia, we conducted a study of the biological and chemical control of the Nantucket Pine-Tip Moths, Rhyacionia spp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) of Loblolly Pines (Pinus taeda) in the Coastal Plain of Georgia.  The project's purpose was to increase the fiber yields of Georgia forests by study of the parasitoids of the Pine-Tip Moths.  Support for the project was from the Georgia Consortium for Technological Competitiveness in Pulp and Paper.
  • I have an ongoing interest in the biology of biting midges Culicoides spp. (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae).  My students and I have focused our research on various aspects of the ecology, morphology and physiology of these tiny hematophagous flies.  I interact with scientists from across the globe.  In May 1997, Soren Achim Nielsen, University of Roskilde, Denmark and I began a collaboration on the Ceratopogonidae of Scandinavia.  Spring 1999, two of Soren Nielsen's students (Enken Hassold and Bjarke Kunde) from Denmark conducted a study (using light and scanning electron microscopy) of the Ceratopogonids collected in Norway.

Graduate Students          Return to Dan Hagan's Home Page

Students in my lab have worked on a variety of ecological projects.  Generally students have good field skills gained from work or field-oriented courses.  Students often are funded either through graduate teaching assistantships or research assistantships paid by my grants.  In recent years, students have been generously supported by the Georgia Consortium for Technological Competitiveness in Pulp and Paper; Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division, Nongame-Endangered Wildlife Grants Program; Glynn County (GA) Commission; Hampton Plantation and Golf Course, St. Simons Island, Ga.; Sapelo Island Research Foundation; University of Georgia, Veterinary Medical Experiment Station Grant; U.S. Coast Guard; U.S. Dept. of Commerce/ Sea Grant Program and The Nature Conservancy.

Teaching - (photos)                                 Return to Dan Hagan's Home Page

I teach/ have taught formal courses in field biology, entomology, comparative animal physiology, biology of aging, as well as undergraduate/ graduate seminars on various aspects of biology.

Insects and People, BIOL 1331

This course is an introduction to the role insects and other arthropods serve in relation to humans. Insect human interactions in the home, yard, garden, workplace, recreational areas, and human body are included. Consideration of the natural history, life cycles and optional human actions regarding pests, beneficial insects, insects and disease, insects and food, and aesthetics.

Field Biology, BIOL 3440

This course is a field introduction to the natural history of plants and animals of the Georgia Coastal Plain. Field collections and observations are integrated with laboratory identification and lectures.

Comparative Animal Physiology, BIOL 5230

This course is a comparative review of the function and regulation of the major systems in animals. Topics include homeostasis, membrane transport, osmoregulation, and energetics.

Comparative Animal Physiology Laboratory, BIOL 5210

This course consists of a laboratory study of the basic physiological processes of animals, with integrated studies of molecular, cellular, metabolic and organ-system functions.  Prerequisite is BIOL 5230, or concurrent registration. This course is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

Biology of Aging, BIOL 5233

This course covers the biological processes accompanying aging in humans and other organisms. The course emphasizes physiological decline, theoretical explanations, attempts to prolong life, and the utility and limitations of model systems used to analyze human aging. Field trips required. This course is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level.  The course provides an introduction to the growing field of gerontology.

Entomology, BIOL 5442

This course examines the phylogeny, morphology, life histories and ecology of insects. Identification of local species emphasized. Field trips required. This course is offered at the undergraduate and graduate level.
