Course Description:

The course provides an introduction to the School of Nursing's Framework of Health Promotion Throughout Life. The concepts of person, nursing, health, environment, health promotion, human caring, communication, ethical principles, critical thinking, empowerment, research, cultural sensitivity, and healthcare technology are explored and applied to specific situations. The student is exposed to the historical aspects of nursing and healthcare, with emphasis on the rural environment, as well as healthcare policy and financial implications in the current healthcare arena. Healthcare delivery systems, barriers to healthcare, and legal aspects of nursing are discussed. The ANA Standards of Nursing Practice are introduced in this course with specific emphasis on caring and ethics.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Discuss the School of Nursing's framework of Health Promotion Throughout Life.

2. Discuss the relevance of critical thinking to research in nursing practice.

3. Devise strategies to promote caring behaviors among clients, students, and faculty.

4. Utilize selected healthcare technology skills.

5. List methods that will minimize costs and barriers to obtaining health.

6. Discuss the application of ethics related to decision-making in nursing practice.

7. Describe individuals and events important to the development of present day nursing.

8. Discuss legal aspects of nursing with special emphasis on responsibility and accountability.

9. Discuss the therapeutic use of self as a critical aspect of communication.

10. Discuss cultural sensitivity and empowerment in relation to the provision of nursing care.

A. Grading Scale for the School of Nursing:

90 - 100 = A
80 - 89 = B
75 - 79 = C
70 - 74 = D
0 - 69 = F

B. The course grade will be derived from the following:
