Fenton and Mom

I am a faculty member in the Department of Political Science at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro (you know the "Statesboro Blues" as done by the Allman Brothers). And the answer to the next question is "it is near Savannah." My areas of concentration are Judicial Politics and Public Law, American Politics, and Methods. I am the one in the middle, above. I am flanked by my wife, Fenton Martin, on my right, and my mother, Patricia Pacelle, on my left. Click here for more on the Pacelle family and Fenton and my family.

When I was younger, I wanted to be someone. I should have been more specific.  I actually had my chance. I was granted a wish and told I could be whatever I wanted to be. I said “A Professor” when I meant to say “The Professor.” My bad.

Life goes on, I suppose.

Allegory Good Government

This is Ambrogio Lorenzetti's Allegory of Good Government (above). It is housed in Siena in the Plazzo Publico. It combines my interests in political science and Renaissance Era (or just pre-Renaissance, to be more precise) art. Of course, Lorenzetti understood that there were two sides to the coin, so he did a fresco of Bad Government (below), as well. Some of the governments who served in Siena over the years tried to destroy this fresco, perhaps so the citizens would not compare the sitting government to the government in the painting.

I teach a variety of courses in Political Science in my research areas. Here's my curriculum vita. Here is some of my recent and maybe not so recent research.

I am from New Haven, Connecticut, home of Pepe's Pizza, the best pizza in the world. Well worth the hour wait in line.

I did my undergraduate work at the University of Connecticut, the center of the basketball universe and home of the 2004 Women's NCAA Basketball Champions for the third consecutive time and the 2004 Men's NCAA Basketball Champions

I did my graduate work at Ohio State University, home of the 2003 NCAA National Champions in Football. Of course, being pre-season #1 did not help the Buckeyes this year. But until January 4, they were the defending national champions. But in the last two years, my alma maters were NCAA football and basketball champions.

I am a huge Neil Young fan. In addition to Neil Young and Crazy Horse and of course, the Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, my favorites are The Band, the Boss, Bruce Springsteen (not George Steinbrenner), Little Feat (particularly with Lowell George). For my take on music....

I have a variety of hobbies and interests, besides the ones you have seen above: I am a big baseball fan, I like traveling and fine food, and I like Renaissance art, particularly the work of Raphael. Take a peek at my Hobbies and Interests. In particular, look for the latest on the Raphael World Tour, my attempt to see every painting by Raphael. I am well on my way.

David

This is not by Raphael. While I am looking for Raphael’s work, I occasionally stumble on to some other art. Of course, this is Michelangelo's David. It was overwhelming to see it in person.

And of course, anyone who knows me knows where to find me at 11:35, 10:35 central, watching David Letterman. Did I ever tell you about the time he read one of my letters on the air and called me up? While it is now the intellectual property of NBC, I am sure a big company like that probably won’t mind if you take a look at it. I have a copy of it.
