What is Information Systems?
Information Systems (IS) is first and foremost a business degree. This degree program prepares graduates to increase business agility and competitiveness through the application
of information technology (IT). IS students forge a solid foundation in business and become IT-savvy through hands-on experience with computing and information technologies.
Why major in Information Systems?
Career opportunities for IS graduates remain strong. According to the U.S Department of Commerce, the occupations that are growing the fastest are those occupations
that the IS degree prepares graduates to enter. Other studies indicate that the most highly sought after graduates
of information technology programs are those that possess both business and computing skills. The supply of qualified college graduates with this combination of skills
is not keeping pace with employer demand. Department of Commerce projections suggest that the gap in supply and demand will continue to increase through
2015. This means that both current and future career opportunities and earning potential will continue to be very favorable for IS majors.
What are the career opportunities in IS?
IS has been Georgia Southern's most successful IT-oriented degree program. In 2002, the IS degree was granted "enhanced" status by the university's Strategic Planning
Council based on its past achievements and its strategic potential to drive the development of a high-tech economic corridor in Southeast Georgia. Hundreds
of our graduates have been successful in industry-leading corporations such as IBM, Oracle, Coca-Cola, and Home Depot, as well as smaller, entreprenurial companies.
Our graduates work in a variety of positions that contribute to business competititveness ranging from those that require strong technical skills to those that involve
managerial and consulting activities. Typical entry-level positions held by our graduates include:
- Web Developer
- Business Analyst
- Consultant
- Network Administrator
|
- Project Manager
- Database Administrator
- Programmer/Analyst
- Systems Analyst
|
What will I study?
IS graduates help organizations harness the power of IT to address business problems and capitalize on business opportunities. To do so requires
both an understanding of basic business functions and hands-on experience with state-of-the-art information technologies.
- Core Business Knowledge
IS majors complete the same core business courses taken by all business majors in GSU's AACSB-accreditied College of Business Administration. These
provide the foundation in accounting, opperations, finance, marketing, and strategic management upon which successful careers in business organizations depend.
- Technology
Beyond the business courses, IS majors develop a wide range of technical skills as they complete a minimum of 11 computing courses, including courses in
programming, systems analysis and design, data communications, networking, database systems, and project management.
- "Hot" Topcis
To ensure that they are well positionsed to enter today's workforce IS majors choose elective courses in hot topic areas such as E-Commerce applications, decision
support systems, data mining, object-oriented development, computer/network security, ERP applications, and wireless communications.

What sets Georgia Southern apart from the rest?
The IS major is housed in GSU's newest building, the College of Information Technology. This $33 million facility is one of the most technologically-advanced
learning environments in the world. Other advantages include:
- A Caring Environment and Faculty Interaction
GSU's IS program takes pride in having a student-centered learning environment led by faculty members who truly care about student success. Students
will experience the difference that high levels of interaction with a dedicated faculty can make. Unlike larger schools, classes are taught by qualified professors,
rather than graduate students, and class sizes are smaller.
- Interaction with Business Leaders
Advisory Council members of the College of Business Administration and the College of Information Technology regularly bring their expertise
to campus as guest speakers. The IS Executive in Residence series also provides opportunities to learn firsthand from distinguished IS professionals. In
addition dozens of IS alumni return each year to participate in our annual IS Alumni Reunion and share their insights about the job market and real world
trends.
- Internships and Co-ops
While earning a degree, students are encouraged to gain valuable experience as interns or Co-ops in a wide variety of businesses and in software
development projects on campus.
- Scholarships and Awards
Scholarships and honors for outstanding achievement are awarded to IS majors each year on the basis of academic merit. Top students are nominated for mermbership
in Alpha Iota Mu, the international honor society for IS students.
each year.
- First Class Computing Facilities
General purpose specialized labs are available for students to use. Students gain computing knowledge and experience using state-of-the art technology.
- Student Support Services
The College provides a Student Services Center to guide students through the process of degree planning and registration.
- Graduate Studies
Graduates have an opportunity to pursue an advanced degree through the IS concentration in the Master of Business Administration program.
- International Accreditation
Gerogia Southern's graduate and undergraduate IS degree programs are accreditied by the AACSB International.
