Position Description
Georgia Southern University
Georgia Southern University is Georgia's “large-scale, small-feel” research University offering the benefits of a major University coupled with the personal attention of a smaller college. Located in the classic main street community of Statesboro, Georgia, just one hour northwest of historic Savannah, Georgia Southern is home to nearly 18,000 students and a beautiful 700-acre park-like campus. Georgia Southern is a University of first-choice within the University System of Georgia and is the only institution in the System to raise its average SAT score for the freshmen class in every year since 1995 (Fall 2008 SAT average is 1111). Georgia Southern University is recognized for its culture of kindness and civility. It enjoys traditions of collegiality, shared governance, and student involvement in decision-making. The entire University community is devoted to the creation of learning experiences of the highest quality. These elements are found in the Mission of the University and are demonstrated each day in countless acts that reinforce these expectations.
A Special Opportunity
Georgia Southern University has a history of effective leadership. The tenure of our last three Presidents was marked by 9, 11, and 12 year terms. Even during a difficult economic era, the University is financially sound. Georgia Southern has a history of athletic excellence and enjoys superb athletic facilities including a new baseball/softball complex and a recently refurbished football stadium (known affectionately and enthusiastically as “Our House”). The campus exhibits a consistent architectural style with an effective master planning process and the Georgia Southern campus is frequently recognized for both its beauty and function. The newly expanded Recreation Activity Center is a point of pride on campus and provides evidence of our commitment to wellness and recreation. The University maintains four Outreach Centers including a Performing Arts Center, a Museum, a Botanical Garden, and a Wildlife Center offering programs and facilities that link campus and community. Georgia Southern enjoys a town/gown relationship that is characterized by mutual respect, collaboration, and unique traditions supporting the University's success. Georgia Southern is a historical and demographic champion of diversity with a strategic commitment to producing transcultural opportunities. Recently, Georgia Southern was reclassified as a Carnegie “Doctoral Research University” offering the new president an opportunity to recast University strategic objectives while preserving our cultural, historical, and mission-related traditions.
