It is best to start the search for research opportunities early in the semester. Below you will find a list of actions to follow to begin the process of identifying potential research opportunities:
Contact the College
Contact the Director of Undergraduate Research within the College of your major using the contact information that can found here. The Director of Undergraduate Research will often know of faculty within the college and affiliated departments who are pursuing research and scholarship within specific areas. Worthwhile research experiences can certainly be found in all areas across campus, so you may wish to make contact outside your college as well.
Visit Departmental Websites
Faculty members often describe their research pursuits within departmental websites. Review the faculty members and their research interests to see where alignments of research interests between the student and the faculty scholar can be made.
Talk with Students
If you know of undergraduates already working with faculty in an undergraduate research project, talk to them about their experience. Similarly, graduate teaching assistants in some courses you are taking may know of undergraduate research opportunities where they are conducting their own graduate level research.
Attend Research Symposia and Seminars
The colleges host many research symposia and seminars throughout the year where undergraduate and graduate students present their work. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the scholarship being conducted by students within all disciplines.
Talk to Faculty
Do not be afraid to talk with faculty members, especially those you have enjoyed. Faculty scholars are people too! Your professors may have opportunities available to engage undergraduate students in their research and scholarship endeavors, or may know of faculty looking for undergraduate researchers. You may need to knock on some doors and talk to many different scholars to find the right opportunity. However, persistence and flexibility will pay off.
