to his or her field of study. These opportunities are available to
juniors, seniors, and graduate students who are currently enrolled in a
Georgia college, university, or accredited law school, or are Georgia residents.
The student must have an overall grade point average of 2.75.
Due to recent
state budget cuts, we are only able to offer unpaid internships for our
spring program. Interested students must complete an application,

an interview with Secretary of state staff. Applications
must be postmarked by November 3, 2003.

HUMAN
RIGHTS CLINIC
The International
Women's Human Rights Clinic at Georgetown University Law Center offers
one two-year graduate fellowship for individuals interested in developing
their skills as advocates.
The Clinic
takes on two to three litigation or legislative projects each year. The
Clinic does not have a prescribed set of topic areas on which students
and fellows work. Rather, projects are chosen for their capacity to offer
Clinic students and fellows the best opportunity to be directly involved
in the research, development and advocacy of women's international human
rights. All projects emphasize the application of international, regional,
and national women's human rights standards in the domestic context and
all require extensive comparative analysis with such standards in other
countries. Past projects include:
-
Drafting notice
of appeal and brief in Amina Lawal's Nigerian federal court appeal of her
Islamic court death sentence for adultery;
-
Conducting fact-finding
missions to Ghana to investigate domestic servitude and the exclusion of
women from the institution of the chieftancy;
-
Drafting proposed
domestic violence legislation for Uganda;
-
Developing a legal
challenge to facially discriminatory employment regulations in Ghana;
-
Drafting a complaint
and brief to challenge discriminatory intestate succession laws in Uganda;
-
Conducting fact-finding
mission on domestic violence in Poland and completing a report and recommendations
for bringing Polish law into compliance with international and European
human rights law;
-
Gathering information
for and writing a report on "honor crimes" in fourteen Middle Eastern and
Latin American countries, which was submitted to the U.N. Special Rapporteur
on Violence Against Women.
While earning
an LLM, Fellows aid in determining appropriate topics for and teaching
the clinical course, planning course materials, and supervising students.
Therefore Fellows must have excellent organizational, verbal communication,
and writing skills. Fellows must also be members of the D.C. bar, or take
steps to apply for membership in the D.C. bar (through examination or waiver)
upon being accepted for the position. The next available fellowship will
begin in the summer of 2004. To apply, please submit resume, law school
transcript, writing sample, and a detailed statement of interest by December
1, 2003. Materials should be directed
to:
