About the Artist: Charles Counts, a potter from Rising Fawn, Ga., was educated in Kentucky, Illinois, and California. He and his first wife Rubynelle established an internationally-renowned studio for craftsmen in the mountains of northwest Georgia. A prolific writer whose articles frequently appear in Crafts Horizons, he served as an advisor for the American Crafts Council and the Georgia Council for the Arts, and was a member of the U.S. delegation to the World Crafts Council in Mexico City in 1976. His artwork was purchased for numerous private and public collections including the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. Mr. Counts was a post recipient of the Georgia Governor’s Award in the Arts. His second wife was Hedi Bak, widow of Georgia Southern art professor Bruno Bak (deceased). Counts died in 2000 while in Nigeria.

About the Artwork: Charles Counts is quoted as saying, “There are as many ways to make pottery as there are languages to speak. When people learn a language, they develop a set of sounds and symbols to communicate with others. Learning the skills of pottery making is like learning a new language. It is important to learn one way quite well. When you have mastered it, you can go on to other methods and techniques.”
