Health Informatics Minor

Customize your undergraduate degree with a minor in health informatics and become a unique asset in a rapidly growing, high-demand field.

The health informatics minor prepares students for the planning and utilization of health information technology in numerous professional career paths. It is ideal for students majoring in information technology, allied health or nursing.

The minor comprises six 3-hour courses and is open to all undergraduate majors.

How do I declare a minor?

Students can declare a health informatics minor by going into My.GeorgiaSouthern.edu and clicking on the change major/minor link. Students will work with their current major advisor to be advised for their minor. Students should be sure to take the courses listed in the minor as found in the University Catalog.

Georgia Southern’s Healthcare Informatics program is proud to be a HIMSS Academic Organizational Affiliate (AOA) Program.

HIMSS is the health care industry’s membership organization focused on better health through information technology (IT). HIMSS leads efforts to optimize health engagements and care outcomes using information technology.

As an Academic Organizational Affiliate, we can offer industry specific health information and technology resources, give our students access to career-boosting connections, and provide HIMSS individual memberships to all students.

Clinical Internship/Practicum Experience Update

Many of the clinical programs offered by the Waters College of Health Professions require a clinical internship or practicum experience to fulfill degree requirements. Pursuant to the University's legal agreements, participants in clinical experiences are required to abide by the workplace rules of the clinical site. The University is aware of recent federal requirements that would mandate vaccination against COVID-19 for those working in certain settings, including health care. At this time, we expect that these new requirements may significantly impact our ability to locate a placement for students who remain unvaccinated. As always, WCHP will continue to make every effort to place students at clinical sites. However, please be aware that we may be unable to locate a site to accept unvaccinated students, which may cause a delay or inability to progress and complete the program of study.
