Holistic Fitness & Wellness

Optimal human performance requires a holistic approach to the person. Soldiers going into combat, first responders ready for the call, or athletes on game day strive to hone their abilities. And the knowledge that comes from preparing them can be applied to the well-being of all. Georgia Southern University researchers, through experimentation and partnerships, are trailblazing in clinical, evaluative, and translational discoveries that are aimed at improving the physical, mental and spiritual health and well-being that enhances childhood and adult life.

Public Impact Research

Holistic Fitness and Wellness research at Georgia Southern impacts individuals’ health, well-being, and productivity by ensuring that first responders and healthcare professionals do their jobs optimally, and that we have cutting edge medical therapies and data at our disposal to provide high quality preventatives, diagnostics, and treatments. Holistically healthy citizens are able to contribute socially, culturally, economically, and to the safety of their communities.

Faculty Expertise

Performance Enhancement

We have faculty teams investigating ways to optimize physical and mental performance on the job or on the playing field. Research projects range from understanding how mindfulness practices help police officers make better decisions when faced with a threat to how children’s nutrition impacts school-based outcomes.

Innovation in Health and Wellness Treatment

How can we innovate medical treatments to improve patient outcomes and enhance quality of life? Our researchers utilize technology to create medical therapies for cancer and other diseases. Engineers, computer scientists, and public health faculty bring different perspectives to develop medical equipment and healthcare services that enhance the efficacy of medical treatments.

Health Informatics

Faculty work in the area of health informatics to track and trace how different behaviors prevent or cause disease progression or what disease trends we see in different regions of the country or world. For example, faculty use social media to identify and track outbreaks of infectious diseases. Understanding such data trends helps us to be better prepared to implement preventative measures.
