Publication by COE faculty member Aslihan Unal receives two awards

Aslihan Unal, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Elementary and Special Education, published a paper in the Journal of Research in Education that has now received accolades from two research organizations.

“Preparing Teachers for Diverse Schools – An online Tool for Calculating School Diversity for Field Placements,” analyzes the diversity of field placements in teacher education programs by utilizing a web-based application that records and calculates diversity of field placements within a university setting in Florida. The study and findings emphasize the importance of placing preservice teachers in diverse schools for field practicums, resulting in higher graduate and employer satisfaction.

The paper first received recognition from the Eastern Educational Research Association (EERA). Named the 2021 “Best Professional Paper,” Unal and second author Zafer Unal, Ph.D. of University of South Florida, were recognized in February 2021.

In April, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) named Unal the recipient of the 2021 AERA Distinguished Paper Award, recognizing her at the virtual annual meeting April 8-12.
