Internship Summary

Georgia Southern is currently seeking highly-motivated and talented individuals for internship positions with the Enterprise Networking team, a division of Information Technology Services. We are responsible for the day to day operations, maintenance, management, and engineering of the University’s network infrastructure (Cisco and Juniper switches, Cisco routers, Cisco and Palo Alto firewalls, Cisco wireless infrastructure, as well as auxiliary systems such as TACACS/RADIUS/AAA, monitoring, alerting, etc.). We are looking for driven individuals that desire to continue their networking education with real world experience. The Student Intern  will be responsible for assisting with projects involving maintenance, engineering, administration, and management of the University’s network and auxiliary systems.

The Student Intern works in various roles within the Enterprise Networking team on either the Statesboro or Armstrong campuses; Student Interns perform a variety of tasks to help supplement both the daily operations, as well as project-based engineering responsibilities of the team. These tasks can be manual (performing hardware installation/removal, assisting in moving equipment from site to site), technical (initial triage for both student and faculty-impacting service requests) or administrative (documenting customer communication, troubleshooting steps and results, assist in maintaining both passive and active inventories, etc.).

The Student Intern will receive experience in a real-world enterprise network operations team that maintains the University’s network switches, routers (access, distribution, and core), firewalls, wireless infrastructure, performs proactive network monitoring, and executes a variety of jobs to maintain the University’s network.

Responsibilities

  • Receive training from Enterprise Networking staff on technologies, processes, and procedures.
  • Tier 1 customer engagement for low priority service requests
  • Responds to common questions from students, faculty, staff.
  • Maintain Information Technology operational processes and tasks.
  • Create or update technical documentation for network installations or changes to existing installations.
  • Collaborate with systems staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and

systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.

 Educational Requirements

  • Must be enrolled in an IT, IS, or Engineering undergraduate program at Georgia Southern University and seeking a degree-required internship.

 Education Preferences

  • Junior or Senior IT major with an emphasis in Networking/Data Center Specialization.

 Preferred Experience

  • Have already taken and passed (preferred B or higher) introductory Network courses.
  • Proven foundational and functional knowledge in a real world application.
  • Previous customer service representative experience.
  • Some level of networking or IT experience.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

 KNOWLEDGE

  • Thorough understanding of the OSI model, specifically, layers 1-4
  • Working knowledge of ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP.
  • Working knowledge of the roles various networking devices perfo

 ABILITIES

  • Ability to work well in a diverse environment
  • Proficiency with computer and Microsoft Office/G Suite applications software including word processing, spreadsheets, and network topology diagrams.

 SKILLS

  • Effective communication skills (oral and written)
  • Developed organizational and interpersonal skills
