M.Ed. C&I Accomplished Teaching – Mission & Program Outcomes
The mission of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching Program is to prepare teachers who are responsive to and able to address the diverse academic and affective needs of all students in grades P-12; committed to and able to implement high academic standards for all students; committed to developing school and community partnerships as part of the instructional program; committed to the belief that all students can learn; able to effectively incorporate technological resources to enhance student learning; and committed to and able to apply best practices in the secondary schools. The program provides opportunities for candidates to further develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions delineated in state and national teacher education standards. Central to the program are multiple opportunities for candidates to develop and apply their knowledge and skills in instructional planning, classroom instruction, and assessment of student learning appropriate for one’s teaching field and grade levels. The program supports the university mission of engagement by providing the learning experiences of the highest quality, informed by scholarly practice, research, and creative activities. The program provides all candidates a student-centered environment that promotes collaboration, technological advancement, partnerships with area P-12 schools, and lifelong learning.
Student Learning Outcome 1:
Graduates of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching will demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the content they are currently certified to teach, which will include the content appropriate to one’s subject area. All key assessments artifacts are created by the students using the content information from the field in which they are currently certified. Candidates must demonstrate:
a) an identification of central issues in one’s teaching field,
b) a development of key goal statements,
c) an application of NBPTS standards,
d) development of instructional objectives and an application of the appropriate content in one’s teaching field,
e) development of instructional modifications based on student performance data, and
f) development of developmentally appropriate instructional strategies in one’s teaching field
Student Learning Outcome 2:
Graduates of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching will plan effective teaching and learning experiences for diverse learners, which will include:
a) a comprehensive description of the school and learners,
b) an accurate and an in-depth presentation of the content they plan to teach,
c) the use of a variety of classroom instructional strategies that address the diversity of learners,
d) a thorough description of a safe learning environment that promote the success of all students,
e) the use of multiple assessments that address the diversity among student learners,
f) the use of a range of current resources, including technology.
Student Learning Outcome 3:
Graduates of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching will apply effective teaching and learning experiences during field experiences in their specific teaching/certification field, which will include a demonstration of:
a) instructional competencies that ensure that candidates have an
in-depth understanding of the content they teach,
b) multiple explanations and instructional strategies that address the diversity of learners,
c) the use of a safe learning environment that promotes the success of all students,
d) the use of multiple assessments that address the diversity among student learners,
e) the use of a range of current resources, including technology,
f) the professional dispositions that ensure that all students learn.
Student Learning Outcome 4:
Graduates of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching program will effectively assess and analyze student learning, which will include:
a) the use of effective assessment strategies to determine the backgrounds and achievements of learners in order to facilitate their intellectual, social, and
personal development,
b) an analysis and interpretation of student performance data, using a range of assessments,
c) a plan to use performance data to modify instruction in order to ensure that all students learn.
Student Learning Outcome 5:
Graduates of the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction, Accomplished Teaching program will demonstrate the professional dispositions that are expected of educators, which will include:
a) collaboration with peers, parents, and other school personnel,
b) professional behaviors and expectations,
c) the belief that all students can learn,
d) communicating respect for and development of a rapport with all students,
e) developing a culturally responsive learning environment,
f) following laws related to the rights and responsibilities of all students,
g) adhering to state and local Code of Ethics.
