Huffling and Scott collaborate with teachers on citizen science publication
Lacey Huffling, Ph.D., and Heather Scott, Ed.D., assistant professor, both of the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education co-authored an article with teachers and alums Melissa Weeks, Hayward Johnson, Britt Gantt and Regina Collins. The article, titled “Exploring the Zooniverse,” was published in the May/June 2021 edition of The Science Teacher, the National Science Teaching Association’s peer-reviewed practitioner journal for secondary level and high school science teachers.
The article details an introductory-level learning experience using wildlife camera-based citizen science projects hosted on Zooniverse, a citizen science web portal owned and operated by the Citizen Science Alliance.
The lesson set comprised of five 90-minute class periods in six separate high school classrooms ranging from honors to inclusion students. Overall, students were highly engaged in the learning experience.
