Deal Center Early Language & Literacy Grant in Savannah-Chatham

College of Education faculty members Sally Brown, Ph.D., Nedra Cossa, Ph.D., Antonio Gutierrez de Blume, Ph.D., and Alisa Leckie, Ph.D., were awarded a grant from the Deal Center for Early Language and Literacy. Their grant, titled An Inclusive and Responsive Approach to Decoding Print with Young Learners in Hybrid and Virtual Learning Environments, provides professional development and ongoing support for first and second grade teachers in five schools in Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools (SCCPSS). The purpose of the professional development is to help teachers implement shared and guided reading practices in virtual and hybrid environments. The first cohort of teachers participated this spring, and two more cohorts are planned for the summer and the fall. Participating schools in Savannah Chatham include: Godley Station K-8, Hesse K-8, Garden City Elementary, Gould Elementary, and Windsor Forest Elementary.
