Spring 2020 Commencement Announcement

Georgia Southern University has finalized details for the Spring 2020 commencement ceremonies in Savannah and Statesboro.

After careful evaluation of the capacity of available venues, number of graduates expected, and the comfort of both graduates and their guests, the following schedule has been established to maximize the experience for everyone. As a reminder, undergraduate and graduate students will graduate in separate ceremonies.

  • Graduate Ceremony (for specialist, master’s and doctoral degree candidates) – Friday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. in Allen E. Paulson Stadium on the Statesboro Campus

Originally scheduled for the Hanner Fieldhouse, this ceremony has been moved to Paulson Stadium based on the number of expected graduates and to allow more guest tickets for each graduate. This is the only ceremony where graduate students will be recognized and receive degrees.

Two additional ceremonies will be held for undergraduate students only (for those earning associate’s or bachelor’s degrees). Undergraduate students can choose the ceremony location where they would like to graduate:

  • Undergraduate Ceremony in Statesboro – Friday, May 8 at 5:30 p.m. in Allen E. Paulson Stadium on the Statesboro Campus
  • Undergraduate Ceremony in Savannah – Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. on the Intramural Field on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah

The university remains committed to providing a quality, memorable experience for graduates and guests, which includes holding ceremonies in both Savannah and Statesboro and ensuring students are properly recognized.

Each graduate will be recognized individually at each ceremony as they walk across the stage. All colleges will be represented at both locations and students will be organized by college.

It’s important to note that the size of the ceremonies and the outdoor locations necessitate that the ceremonies will be held in the listed locations, rain or shine.

Ticketing will be required for each guest at every ceremony. This is done to ensure the size of the audience does not exceed the size of the venues. The number of tickets allotted to each graduate will depend on the size of the graduating class. Based on current projections, we anticipate each graduate will be allowed 6-8 guest tickets, but a final number will be determined after the graduation RSVP deadline has passed. The number of tickets allotted per graduate may vary between ceremony locations. When the per-person ticket count is determined, this information, as well as other details and updates, will be communicated to graduating students approximately one month before the ceremony and be posted on the Spring 2020 commencement page. A ticket bank, where unused tickets can be made available for others who need extra tickets, also will be available.

There will be no charge for tickets. Each guest, including children of all ages, will need a ticket. The university will again have overflow seating/alternative viewing areas and live-streaming for those who do not get tickets, or who need/want an indoor location for viewing the ceremony.

Congratulations to all graduating students.

We are excited to celebrate your accomplishments in May!
