Overview of the Internship Application Process

This overview includes instructions for filling out the form in Handshake.

  1. LAND YOUR INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY.
In the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH), undergraduate students are responsible for searching for and landing an internship site. While JPHCOPH does not place students, there are several different resources available, including:
    • Accessing the list of previous internship sites on the JPHCOPH website,
    • Speaking with faculty in JPHCOPH, and
    • Utilizing resources through the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD), such as Handshake, Career Shift, or reaching out to your Career Development Specialist.
  2. FILL OUT HANDSHAKE EXPERIENCES APPLICATION.
Students will need to complete a Handshake Experiences application to start the approval process for their internship. Handshake is available through the MyGeorgiaSouthern homepage. Once in the Handshake platform, click “Career Center” then “Experiences” and then “Request an Experience.” Here are the most important things about your Experiences application:
    • Be sure to select “Public Health – Undergraduate Internship” as the “Experience Type.”
    • Fill in all of the information about the internship and your site supervisor.
    • Provide a minimum of three learning objectives or planned duties for your site. Be as thorough as possible in this section, so that we can ensure your site is appropriate and will provide a quality experience.
  3. COMPLETE AND RETURN PAPERWORK.
After your application has been reviewed by your advisor and the internship coordinator, you will be prompted to complete your paperwork. The paperwork will be added to the “Attachments” section of your Experiences application. Simply log back into Handshake and navigate to Experiences, then download and complete your paperwork. Please ensure all pages are signed by you and, when necessary, your site supervisor. Paperwork can be signed by hand or digitally signed in Adobe. After your paperwork is signed and ready for approval, log back into your Experiences application and upload the completed forms to the Attachments section.
  4. RECEIVE FINAL APPROVAL.
The Internship Coordinator will review your signed paperwork and approve your internship. You will receive a notification that your internship is approved. In that notification, you will find the link to complete the Course Override form, which will enroll you in the course.

After this, you are all set and ready to begin your internship. No further action will be needed in Handshake Experiences, and everything during will your internship will be completed in Folio.
