Center for Sustainability to host Recycled Boat Regatta

A new tradition may be bubbling up at Georgia Southern -- one that includes a splashy race to the finish. Georgia Southern’s Center for Sustainability (CfS) and Southern Adventures have teamed up to bring the University its first Recycled Boat Regatta at 4 p.m. on March 9 at Lake Ruby, next to Lakeside Dining Commons. The Recycled Regatta is Georgia Southern’s signature event for RecycleMania 2017, a premier collegiate recycling competition managed by Keep America Beautiful. Crews have the opportunity to build boats from various recycled materials, such as cardboard, 2-liter bottles, milk jugs and plastic barrels, and race them over a course on Lake Ruby. “This event shows students that everyday materials can find a second life in the construction of new items -- in this case, boats,” said Cami Sockow, program coordinator of the CfS. “The competition demonstrates the lasting value of household items with a fun twist.” The race will be judged by a member of the Ogeechee Riverkeeper and affiliates of the University. Trophies will not only go to the speediest craft, but to the best sinker and the most superior team effort as well. Last year, Georgia Southern recycled almost 84,000 pounds over the course of the eight-week RecycleMania competition. The CfS hopes to increase this number during RecycleMania 2017. Crews of students, faculty and/or staff are encouraged to participate with a maximum of four members per team. Registration is now open on the CfS website. The deadline to register is March 5 at 5 p.m. Further questions can be directed to the CfS email at cfs@georgiasouthern.edu. Your Student Sustainability fees at work!
