Georgia Southern students raise awareness of hunger

Graduate students enrolled in the Public Health and Community Nutrition course in School of Health and Kinesiology’s Dietetic Internship (DI) have started an initiative to raise awareness of the challenges of food insecurity and hunger at Georgia Southern University. Students in the course, taught by Rebecca Larson, RD, were tasked with designing an intervention program regarding food insecurity among college students. The students chose to host the Eagles Helping Eagles Food Drive from March 20 through April 5. Food drive boxes were placed in the lobbies of all the residence halls at Georgia Southern, and students were encouraged not only to donate food to prevent food waste, but also to take food if needed. “Our goal is to make this project self-sustaining so that the ‘take and leave donations’ are always accessible,” stated DI Bethany Soph. The students’ motto for the project was “Feed Students, Not Landfills.” They hope to encourage others on campus to take actions that will minimize food waste not only across Georgia Southern’s campus but campuses nationwide. The DI students have created a social marketing campaign in hopes of leading the campus community to make these behavior changes. “We’re hoping to change the attitude toward food waste and the perception of those in need by knowing Eagles can always help Eagles,” stated DI Brittney Roley.
