Charles ‘Hal’ Wilson receives inaugural Johnson/Bradley Torch Bearer Award

Charles "Hal" Wilson Jr.

The Waters College of Health Professions (WCHP) Inclusion, Equity and Access Committee has presented Charles “Hal” Wilson Jr., Ph.D., with the inaugural Johnson/Bradley Torch Bearer Award.

The Torch Bearer Award is named in recognition of Otis Johnson, Ph.D., and Dr. John D. Bradley. As the first Black students on the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses, these men were Georgia Southern University’s first torchbearers. Their lives speak to advancing inclusion, equity and access.

Wilson is recognized for his demonstrated commitment to advancing inclusion, equity and access in all facets of his career. His scholarly activities also support his dedication to promoting inclusion, equity and access.

Wilson, an associate professor in the Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology, is a member of many organizations that work on inclusion and equity in coaching, and he has leveraged his membership within these bodies to work on diversifying the applicants of Georgia Southern’s graduate programs.

In 2017, Wilson created the Hoops with Heroes program that brings law enforcement officers together with community youth to grow relationships and reinforce life skills, and in 2020 he created the Students of the Semester program which recognizes undergraduate coaching students. Wilson currently serves as a member of his department’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and was named a Georgia Southern University Inclusive Excellence Faculty and Staff Fellow for 2021-2022.

Annually, one WCHP faculty member, one WCHP staff member and one WCHP group will be awarded the Torch Bearer Award.

Individual awards are open to faculty and staff in WCHP who have advanced inclusion, equity and access to any Georgia Southern campus or on the local, state, national or international level.

The group award is open to any department, unit, team or registered organization in the College that has advanced inclusion, equity and access on any Georgia Southern campus or on the local, state, national or international level.
