Georgia Southern announces Nikki Giovanni as 2017 MLK Celebration speaker
Georgia Southern will welcome Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist and educator, to campus on Wednesday, Jan. 18. As the University’s 2017 MLK Celebration speaker, Giovanni will present her speech, “The Right to Dream,” for the annual event. Each year, the MLK Celebration provides an opportunity for the campus and local community to gather and celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Fall 2016 Commencement set for Dec. 9
Georgia Southern University’s 25th annual Fall Commencement ceremony for graduate and undergraduate students will be held on Friday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m., at Allen E. Paulson Stadium. Mike Royal has been selected as this year’s Fall Commencement ceremony speaker.

Annual Tree Planting Ceremony on Dec. 7
Georgia Southern University President Jaimie Hebert, Ph.D., will host the annual Tree Planting Ceremony on Sweetheart Circle, a tradition dating back to the 1970s when former University President Dale Lick began planting a tree in December instead of mailing Christmas cards to the campus community to kick off the holiday season.

Facilities Operations Team wins gold
Georgia Southern’s Facilities Operations Team (a unit in the Division of Facilities Services) was recently recognized as the gold winner of the 2016 Chancellor’s Service Excellence Team of the Year Award.
Southern Gentlemen win Collegiate Challenge
Southern Gentlemen, the a cappella barbershop ensemble at Georgia Southern University, were named champions with a superior rating at the inaugural Carolinas District Collegiate Challenge on Nov. 12 and took home a $500 prize and commemorative plaque.
