Peace, Phipps receive awards at annual gala

Professor of biostatistics and Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholar Karl Peace, Ph.D., and Karen Phipps, director of the College of Education’s EAGLE Academy, both received awards during the 29th annual Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Awards gala held in May. Peace was selected as the Statesboro Herald Humanitarian of the Year, and Phipps received the Deen Day Smith Service to Mankind Award.


Cynthia Johnson, Ph.D., receives award for work in family and consumer sciences

Cynthia Johnson, Ph.D., received the Georgia Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (GAFCS) Leader Award for her significant contributions to the field of family and consumer sciences (FCS). Johnson was presented the award during the 2017 GAFCS Annual Conference in Athens, Georgia, on March 31, by GAFCS President, Karen Jones, and Vice President of Awards and Recognition, Arlene Fitts Winfrey.

COE alumna to serve on South Carolina Teacher of the Year Honor Court for 2017

Georgia Southern University College of Education (COE) alumna Elisabeth Hardy, Ed.D., (‘95, ‘07) has earned the title of Aiken County Teacher of the Year 2015-2016.

Hardy was one of five teachers recently honored by the South Carolina Department of Education as a nominee for the state’s title of Teacher of the Year. Though she was not named the recipient of the state title, Hardy will serve on the South Carolina Teacher of the Year Honor Court for the upcoming year. As a member of the Honor Court, Hardy received $10,000 and will have the opportunity to represent Aiken County at speaking events across the state.

7 Eagles to compete in Miss Georgia Pageant

Alumni School teach award

Seven Georgia Southern University students, including Miss Georgia Southern University Victoria Murry, will compete in the 2017 Miss Georgia Pageant set for June 13-16 in Columbus, Georgia, with hopes of advancing to the Miss America pageant in September.

The campus community can offer their support by casting a vote for the People’s Choice by clicking here. The Miss Georgia contestant with the most votes will automatically advance into top 15. Each vote is $1, and there is no minimum or maximum number of votes any one person can submit. Proceeds from the 2017 People’s Choice Awards will benefit the Miss Georgia Scholarship fund. Online voting ends June 15 at 9 p.m., EST.
