The Sahara Desert sure makes an interesting classroom, don’t you think? These Georgia Southern students visited the Sahara while studying Arabic with lecturer Youssef Salhi in Morocco this summer through the University’s Study Abroad program.


Rawat wins prestigious NSF CAREER award

Danda Rawat photoDanda Rawat, Ph.D., an assistant professor of electrical engineering at Georgia Southern, has earned a prestigious early career award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Rawat was the recipient of the NSF Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) award, a prestigious award that supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research.

Carroll selected as a 2016 Governor’s Teaching Fellow

Denise CarrollDepartment of Biology Lecturer G. Denise Carroll, Ph.D., has been selected as a 2016 Governor’s Teaching Fellow. As one of 15 faculty members from institutions of higher education across the state, Carroll was selected after a highly competitive application and selection process.

The Governor’s Teaching Fellows Program was established in 1995 by Zell Miller, governor of Georgia from 1991-99, to provide Georgia’s higher education faculty with expanded opportunities for developing important teaching skills.

Never too late to accomplish a goal

Wayne WilliamsAs any new college graduate might claim, Georgia Southern alumnus Wayne Williams said the journey to receiving his bachelor of general studies degree with an emphasis in business and management with a minor in writing, wasn’t an easy one.

“It was tough. Most of my school work was done in the wee hours of the morning, and I didn’t sleep a lot,” he said with a laugh. “Most of my school work would be done after everything else I was working on was done.”

Lot 21 construction is underway

Parking Lot Closed signOn May 31, Georgia Southern University began construction on Lot 21, located behind the Dining Commons and the University Store. Student parking will not be available until the lot reopens on Aug. 12. Faculty and staff parking will be relocated behind the Russell Union through the end of the summer.

If you are a Lot 21 parking permit holder, please stop by the Parking and Transportation department as soon as possible to exchange your Lot 21 parking permit. If you have any questions, call 912-478-7275 (GSU-PARK) or, for more information, visit their website.


Georgia Southern student receives scholarship for work with Your Skin Is In college ambassador program

Beth Jenkins, a student in Georgia Southern’s Department of Communication Arts, was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Melanoma Foundation of New England (MFNE) for participating in the Your Skin Is In college ambassador program.

Jenkins’ scholarship was one of six awarded to college students across the United States. The program is aimed at preventing the most serious form of skin cancer.
