Georgia Southern hosts Social Gerontology Conference
The Center for Social Gerontology at Georgia Southern University will host its inaugural Social Gerontology Conference Oct. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Nessmith-Lane Center.
Guests will benefit from presentations with keynote speaker and Laughter Yoga expert, Celeste Green, as well as other noteworthy presentations on aging-related topics that are trending today.
There will be breakout sessions on a range of subjects including sex in late life, dealing with older adults with mental illness and cognitive disorders, death and dying and how to support adult children of aging parents.

Faculty and alumni present research at 26th Annual EECERA Conference
Faculty and alumni from Georgia Southern University attended and presented research at the 26th Annual European Early Childhood Education Research Association (EECERA) Conference held in Dublin, Ireland, Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.
The conference, the largest childhood conference in Europe, consisted of 920 participants from six continents and 44 countries.
Two nursing students awarded the St. Joseph’s/Candler Georgia Southern University Nightingale Scholarship

History professor wins award for new book on women apparel workers
Department of History and College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) faculty member Michelle Haberland’s, Ph.D., latest book, Striking Beauties: Women Apparel Workers in the U.S. South, 1930–2000, was awarded the Southern Historical Association’s H. L. Mitchell Award.
The H. L. Mitchell Award recognizes a distinguished book concerning the history of the Southern working class, including, but not limited to, industrial laborers and/or small farmers and agricultural laborers.
BFSDoArt to host several events this month featuring acclaimed professional artists, Manuel Lima and Yoko Sekino-Bové
The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art will host several events this month featuring two acclaimed professional artists, Manuel Lima and Yoko Sekino-Bové. Renowned author and information design specialist Manuel Lima will visit Georgia Southern on Oct. 13 at 5 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building, Room 2071, as part of the Department’s Professions in Practice lecture series. In addition, nationally respected potter Yoko Sekino-Bové, serves as artist-in-residence through Oct. 21. The community can meet Sekino-Bové during Conversations Over Tea on Oct. 17 from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at the Center for Art and Theatre at Georgia Southern. The artist also will present a public lecture on Oct. 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Visual Arts Building, Room 2071.
