Introducing the new Department Chair of IT

The Department of Information Technology would like to introduce Dr. Yiming Ji as the new department chair starting July 1, 2019!

Dr. Yiming Ji is a Professor and director of the Computational Science program at the University of South Carolina Beaufort. He also serves as the Chair for the department of Computer Science. His areas of scholarly interest include wireless communications and computer networks, modeling and simulation, scientific computing, and digital signal processing.

Dr. Ji received his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Auburn in 2006. After graduation, he then joined USCB as an instructor in Computer Science. The following year, he was named an Assistant Professor; he was appointed an Associate Professor in 2010 and a full professor in 2013.

Dr. Ji was trained as an aerospace engineering and has worked in the aerospace industry before returning to school to study computer science. Inspired to train others to integrate computer science and engineering as he had done. Dr. Ji founded the B.S. Computational Science program at USC Beaufort, the only one of its kind in South Carolina. Later, Dr. Ji also established the M.S. program in Computational Science and a second B.S. program Information Science and Technology program at USC Beaufort.

Dr. Ji was named a “Rising Star” by the Office of Research and Graduate Education at the University of South Carolina System in 2010. In 2016, he was presented with the South Carolina Governor’s Award for Excellence in Scientific Research. In 2017, he earned USCB’s Academic Advisor Award; and in 2018, he was selected for the Breakthrough Leadership in Research Award and the Carolina Trustees Professorship Award.

Since 2009, Dr. Ji has secured more than $2.5 million in grant and education funding. He has consistently received external research funding awards, including NSF NeTS and NSF EPSCOR RII awards that are intended to help build collaborative research teams working on NSF priority areas.

In the 13-year period from 2006 to 2019, he offered more than 100 class sections covering 22 distinct subjects. Dr. Ji teaches courses in Computer/Computational Science, Computational Engineering, and Information Science and Technology.
