Instructional technology faculty publish chapter in e-book highlighting innovation during COVID-19

College of Education Instructional Technology faculty Elizabeth Downs, Ph.D., Charles Hodges, Ph.D., and Stephanie Jones, Ph.D. co-authored a book chapter in the recent e-book, “Teaching, Technology, and Teacher Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Stories from the Field.”

The chapter, titled “Adapting a Graduate-level Practicum Experience during an Emergency Response,” describes the opportunity and need for innovation during the Spring 2020 semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic, causing K-12 schools and universities across the nation to move to distance learning and virtual practices. While the M.Ed. Instructional Technology program at Georgia Southern is traditionally delivered in an online format, students typically complete practicum experiences in K-12 schools, applying the skills and knowledge gained throughout their program of study.

As the articles introduction states, “the changes and adaptations reflected an opportunity to view the practicum through the lens of situated cognition as the authentic real-world context that facilitated the changes in a field-based experience.”

Downs, Hodges and Jones detail how the master’s degree students were able to complete the state-required 100-hour, field-based practicum for their certification in instructional technology.
