Parks to present for University of South Dakota health community

On Monday, February 22, Fayth Parks, Ph.D., will present virtually at the 7th Annual University of South Dakota (USD) School of Health Sciences Diversity, Inclusivity, and Cultural Awareness Forum.

Parks will present, “Harnessing the Power of Cultural Strengths in Healthcare Practice” at 1 p.m. for students, faculty and alum of USD. The lecture will provide insight into the diverse ways health disparities and healthcare access impact different communities.

“This necessitates learning innovative ways to think critically about the role healing traditions play in a person’s medical belief system,” said Parks. “Employment of vernacular knowledge about the cause, prevention and treatment of physical and mental illness along with conventional medicine is a form of medical pluralism where more than one system is in use.”

Parks emphasizes that four elements can help form a framework for understanding how diverse cultures construction healing experience: spirituality, power-of-words, ritual and dreams.
