COE faculty and staff collaborate on publication

In an article recently published in Hofstra University’s Special Education, Research, Policy and Practice (Volume 5), College of Education’s Karin Fisher, Ph.D., Peggy Shannon-Baker, Ph.D., Kelly Brooksher, Ed.D., and Kania Greer, Ed.D., collaborated to explore the benefits of STEM activities for students with disabilities.

In the sequential explanatory mixed method study, the research team gather teachers’ perceptions on current STEM clubs and offerings at their schools, the number of students with disabilities that participate, and if the teachers had training to work with students with disabilities. Findings indicate that while a variety of clubs are offered at schools with an average of 20 participants, teachers are not aware of the number, if any, students with disabilities that participate. Also, none of the teachers surveyed had professional development to work with students with disabilities in informal environments such as camps or clubs.

The research team then provided accommodations STEM club sponsors could use for students wishing to participate whom may have disabilities.
