The University Awards of Excellence for faculty and staff are aligned with the University’s Strategic Pillars and Values and designed to identify and celebrate individuals that make outstanding contributions to the success of Georgia Southern University.


The power of people: alumnus global nonprofit serves at-risk population in pandemic

Growing up in Sri Lanka, volunteering was a way of life for Nipuna Ambanpola (’19).

When he moved to Savannah, Georgia, to attend Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus in 2015, he carried that tradition forward with the launch of IVolunteer International, a tech nonprofit with a vision to create a network of 7 billion volunteers worldwide.

The group’s newest directive is a partnership with Shopping Angels, a program that offers volunteer food-delivery services to at-risk populations in the U.S. during the COVID-19 pandemic.


Georgia Southern University names Stuart Tedders as dean of Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health

Georgia Southern University has tapped Stuart Tedders, Ph.D., as the next dean of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health.

Tedders, a professor of epidemiology who started his career at Georgia Southern and has become a widely respected rural health researcher, has been serving as the college’s interim dean since July 2019. His appointment is effective immediately.


Providing for a school’s needs during a time of change: the story of an instructional technology specialist

Georgia Southern University alumna Robin Thompson (’13) is a media specialist and technology integrator at Richmond Hill High School, although she likes to refer to herself as a “technology instigator.”

“I try to push people out of their comfort zone with technology and have them try new things,” said Thompson.

Leading up to the announcement of the closing of Georgia public schools, Thompson knew her expertise would be needed.


2020 USG required Cyber Security Training course now available

USG cyber security training

You can now access the University System of Georgia’s Cyber Security Training course via the Folio widget in your MyGS portal. This training course is required for all Georgia Southern faculty and staff.

The 20-minute mandatory training course must be completed by May 15.


Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art hosts online exhibition ‘Juried 2020’

The Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art (BFSDoArt) is hosting its annual juried student exhibitions this spring, but for the first time they will appear online. The second of three exhibitions, “Undergraduate Juried 2020” features student work from students enrolled in BFSDoArt undergraduate classes. The exhibition is available to view online through April 24.


EAGLE Academy students seize distance learning as a new opportunity to prepare for the digital world

When Georgia Southern University College of Education members founded EAGLE Academy, they never planned for students to learn virtually. So when the University System of Georgia colleges and universities closed their campuses in response to the coronavirus pandemic, EAGLE Academy had to determine a new way to help students reach their goals from a distance.
