The Georgia Southern University Army ROTC program is looking for volunteers for this year’s Freedom Run 5K/10K race set for April 22 at the RAC Pavilion.

Volunteers are needed at water points throughout the race route and for general route management as they guide runners on course.

Jeremy Horstman named Veteran Small Business Champion by SBA’s Georgia District Office

The U.S. Small Business Administration’s (SBA) Georgia District Office has awarded Jeremy Horstman the 2017 Veteran Small Business Champion in the 2017 National Small Business Week awards for Georgia.

Horstman is the director of the Veterans Business Outreach Center (VBOC) at Georgia Southern University’s City Campus in downtown Statesboro. The Center is one of 20 VBOCs nationwide.

“The Veterans Business Outreach Center team is excited to receive this award as an advocate for ‘vetrepreneurs,’” said Horstman. “As an SBA resource partner, we strive to empower veterans in the small business arena and when they are successful, we are successful. As veterans ourselves, we enjoy helping transitioning veterans on the path to business ownership.”

Students participate in Blue Mile Cleanup

On Saturday, March 25, more than 100 student volunteers participated in a Community Cleanup event in downtown Statesboro. The event was planned by Georgia Southern student Jefferson Doehling, a community liaison in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement. The revitalization effort, led by Habitat for Humanity, included picking up litter and trash from approximately 26 blocks along 11 streets in the Blue Mile Neighborhood Revitalization area, filling up nearly 100 large trash bags.

The event was sponsored by Bulloch County Habitat for Humanity, with refreshments provided by Three Tree Coffee Roasters.


City of Statesboro provides new resource to report illegal wrecker services

Towing Regulations

The city of Statesboro has added a new feature to its website where anyone can file a complaint regarding wrecker services. The website also provides a helpful summary of towing fee guidelines for students, residents and visitors. In an effort to further support the community, the Statesboro Police Department is addressing allegations of wrecker services operating using illegal means, specifically “non-consensual towing,” when vehicles are removed from private property at the property owner’s request.

Individuals are encouraged to file a complaint online if they feel a violation of local ordinances has occurred. Each complaint will be reviewed by the Statesboro Police Department and action will be taken if necessary.


School Psychology program receives NASP national recognition status

Georgia Southern School Psychology program receives

Georgia Southern University’s College of Education received notification that its Ed.S. in School Psychology program has been awarded full-approval/national recognition status from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), a recognition of the program’s demonstrated consistency with NASP standards. Georgia Southern is one of only three universities in the state of Georgia with NASP-approved school psychology programs and has the only specialist degree program in the state that is nationally-recognized and NASP-approved.

During this time, Anderson provided consultation to ECU faculty and led lectures on how faculty can help facilitate ECU’s goal of implementing curriculum on family care into their undergraduate to doctoral education programs. She also helped faculty become more comfortable having a family nursing, or care of families, focus in their curriculum.

Georgia Southern faculty serves as visiting professor at Australian University

Kathryn Anderson, Ph.D., ARNP, PMHCNS-BC, LMFT, professor in the School of Nursing, was appointed visiting professor at Edith Cowan University (ECU) in Perth, Australia, from Jan. 30 to Feb. 10.

During this time, Anderson provided consultation to ECU faculty and led lectures on how faculty can help facilitate ECU’s goal of implementing curriculum on family care into their undergraduate to doctoral education programs. She also helped faculty become more comfortable having a family nursing, or care of families, focus in their curriculum.

“I participated in numerous individual research consultations with faculty, participated in a manuscript writing retreat and lead a ‘Next Steps in Research’ session,” Anderson said.
