Enactus Ready to Compete at Regionals in Atlanta

Enactus has been busy preparing for its first Regional Competition since the student organization’s relaunch in 2013. Members will compete Friday, April 1, 2016, at the competition in Atlanta.

The club’s presentation will be an overview of all the impactful projects its members have facilitated in the past year, including Paws N Claws, SUITS and the Southern Classic Gaming Tournament.

Enactus started the academic year strong with recruiting efforts around campus. Members not only worked to bring more students to Enactus but also spent time building a new student organization, Paws N Claws, a student organization that helps make a direct connection with students interested in animals and the Humane Society of Statesboro & Bulloch County. The local humane society has an ongoing need for people who are willing to foster animals to keep them out of the local shelter. The society also needs volunteers to work at the ReTails Thrift Store, which provides it with a revenue stream. The Paws N Claws organization gives the humane society direct access to interested students who are engaged.

Enactus also partnered with the humane society and the College of Business Hospitality Management Club to organize “Raise the Woof.” In its second year, this evening of comedy, food and spirits raised $4,432 for the humane society, tripling revenues from last year. The students also formed a partnership with the Fashion Merchandising and Design (FMAD) Club to create bandanas from scrap materials to sell at the Downtown Statesboro Development Authority’s First Friday event in March as well as at the ReTails Thrift Store.

The second big project this year was revitalizing the Supplying Underprivileged Individuals Tools for Success or SUITS program. Earlier this year, Enactus applied for and was awarded the Walmart Women’s Economic Empowerment Project Partnership. Enactus has used this grant to form relationships with a local shelter focused on assisting women who have been displaced due to domestic violence. Enactus has used its network to form relationships with Goodwill’s Job Center to assist with training as well as the local Society for Human Resource Management to connect with hiring managers needing employees.

Lastly, Enactus will report on the Southern Classic Gaming tournament the club is organizing in partnership with the local Southern Collegiate Gaming (SCG) Club. Members will utilize this tournament to not only raise awareness and promote cyber security for gamers of all ages but also to raise money for a scholarship sponsored by SCG. This event will take place in May.

Enactus has been very productive in the two years since revamping the club. Its members have been practicing hard to represent Georgia Southern at Regionals this year.
