About Dr. Suazo

Dr. Jorge W Suazo-Jaque has been a member of the Georgia Southern faculty since Fall 1993. He teaches all levels of Spanish both at the undergraduate, graduate level and in the Spanish for Business curriculum. Dr. Suazo has been involved with studies abroad programs in Mexico and he used to direct (1998 -2001) the department’s Segovia Studies Abroad Program in Segovia, Spain.  He is also the Director of the Southeast Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures [SECCLL].

Dr. Suazo is a native of San Carlos, Chile where he completed elementary, high school, and college. He attended Universidad de Chile-Sede Ñuble [now Universidad del Bío-Bío] in Chillán, Chile where he graduated with a B.A. in English Education. He arrived in the United States in 1980 invited by the Amity Institute (of San Diego, California). As an Amity Scholar, he team-taught Spanish at several high schools and a college in West Virginia, Wisconsin and Virginia. Later, he completed his Master of Arts degree in Modern Languages and TESOL Certificate from the Department of Modern Languages, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. Last, he graduated with a Ph.D. in Spanish Golden Age Literature from the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

His areas of interest and general expertise range from Medieval Literature, Golden Age Peninsular Literature: Poetry (Metaphysical/Religious Poets), Golden Age Drama, Picaresque Novel, Early-Modern Women Literature of Spain, especially Conventual Literature, Spanish for the Professions (Spanish for Business, Law, Science and Technology), and On-line Teaching.

He is a member of various professional organizations and he is actively involved in departmental, university and community work. He has participated in several technology workshops as well as academic ones, such as Teaching Portfolio and Spanish for Business.

Dr. Suazo is also an active participant in local, regional, and national professional conferences. He has delivered more than thirty papers in the United States and in Spain. He has been invited to present lectures locally and in nearby areas where he shares his expertise in education, Spanish for Business and about his native Chile.

Dr. Suazo has recently published Mary Symbolism in the “romances” of Francisco de Medrano with the Edwin Mellen Press. He is also preparing an “Anthology of Peninsular Literature” to be published in the near future.
