GIL Express

What is GIL Express?

GIL Express is an initiative whereby circulating books may be ordered directly from any University System of Georgia Library. The subject matter is not limited to research interests; hobby and pleasure reading are perfectly acceptable. In most cases materials are sent to and checked out from the patron’s home library, but patrons may ask that their items be sent to any University System library for pickup. All faculty, staff, and students in good standing are eligible to use the service

Instructions for using GIL Express

Search All University System of Georgia (USG) Collections
By default, the new GIL-Find searches only Georgia Southern’s collections. To search all University System of Georgia (USG) collections, change the “scope” of your search by selecting University System of Georgia in the dropdown menu to the right of the search box and clicking Search.

Request Items from Other USG Campuses
Any time an item in your search results is available from another USG campus, GIL-Find will let you know. If you are unable to obtain a copy of an item from the Henderson or Lane Libraries, you may request that the item be delivered from another USG campus to the your library for pickup.

See what USG campuses own a copy of an item by clicking More Libraries on the Get It tab for the item. To request the item, be sure to sign into your library account first:

Once you have signed into your account, to request an item from another USG campus:

  1. Click More Libraries on the Get It tab for the item you want to request.
  2. From the Institutions list, select any USG library at which the item is available .
  3. Click Request.
  4. Select Georgia Southern University as your pickup institution.
  5. Pick the library where you want to pick up the item.
  6. Complete the form and click. Request

The item will be shipped to the library you chose. You will be notified when it is available for pickup.

How do I check the status of my GIL Express Request?

Check the progress of your requests through the My Account option on the Georgia Southern Library Catalog (http://gil.georgiasouthern.edu). When My Account shows that the book has arrived at your library, ask for it at the Checkout Desk.

GIL Express Tips for Success

GIL Express allows a generous 28 day checkout plus two automatic renewals. In establishing the circulation policies, the University System decided not to charge fines. But in order to deter abuse, all members agreed that there would be no overriding overdues by the local library.

Faculty/ Staff:The library will mail your book to your office if indicated on your Library Patron Account otherwise it will be held at the Checkout Desk for you to pick up. We will hold the book for ten days and on the eleventh day it will be mailed back to the Lending Library.

Students:The library will hold your book at the Checkout Desk for ten days and on the eleventh day it will be mailed back to the Lending Library.

Check your account or call the Henderson Checkout Desk at (912) 478-5647 or the Lane Circulation Desk at (912) 344-3027 to see if your book has arrived.

Be aware that if a library book you need is checked out, you may request that title through GIL Express. It is perfectly acceptable to ask that the library book be recalled and place a GIL Express request at the same time.

Textbooks may not be borrowed through GIL Express or Interlibrary Loan.
