Georgia Southern Hosts STEM Festival
Georgia Southern welcomed more than 1,500 participants to our inaugural STEM Festival on campus a couple of weeks ago. Hosted by the University’s Office of Research and Economic Development, the three-day event was a great success and would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of our faculty and staff. This event was a fantastic way for students to discover and become interested in exploring careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
During the first two days of the Festival, students on campus had the opportunity to meet with prospective employers about internships and employment as well as explore all of the research being performed at the University in the fields of public health, athletic training, coastal plain science and more.
The Festival concluded with a community event for K-12 students and their families at Nessmith-Lane. Some of the hands-on opportunities included launching rockets with Alka Seltzer, making ice cream with liquid nitrogen and learning about robotics.
Rural Health Research Institute Establishes “Partnerships for Health”
Georgia Southern continues to make bold advancements in the field of rural health, and the University’s Rural Health Research Institute (RHRI) has formed four county level “Partnerships for Health.” The initiative is part of the $5.1 million grant awarded to the RHRI in August 2012 from the National Institutes of Health through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. The grant, which focuses on research, training and community outreach throughout rural southeast Georgia, has already enacted several training programs and is in the process of developing new diabetes and high blood pressure focused health interventions.
University Named “Military Friendly School”
For the third year in a row, Georgia Southern has been named a Military Friendly School® by G.I. Jobsmagazine for its efforts to provide educational opportunities to America’s veterans, active-duty troops and their families.
Earlier this year, Military Times named the College of Business Administration (COBA) one of the best business schools for veterans in the United States for its online and part-time MBA program and for having staff dedicated to veterans issues.

Georgia Southern Golf Course to Open
I hope you will make plans to join us on Thursday, Oct. 10 for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of our new 18-hole championship course at University Park. The 167-acre tract of land is located six miles south of campus off of Highway 67 and Harville Road. The course was constructed to expand recreational opportunities for our growing student body through funds from student recreation fees.
The site includes a newly renovated 8,000-square-foot clubhouse, as well as the addition of a maintenance and golf cart storage facility and a practice facility. Features of the practice facility include a 30-station practice range, chipping green and a 10,000-square-foot practice putting green.
The course is open to the public for play beginning Saturday, Oct. 12 at a daily rate or through an annual pass.
Eagle Nation on Parade Debuts New Sculpture
Georgia Southern’s eighth Eagle Nation on Parade sculpture has been installed at the Statesboro Regional Library on Main Street. The six-foot-tall “Bulloch County Family Tree” eagle was designed by Scott Foxx, a master of fine arts candidate in the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art. Over the past year, the Bulloch County Historical Society worked with the Eagle Nation on Parade team members to create a piece of art that features important Bulloch County figures and landmarks, including Jack Averitt, Emma Kelly, Blind Willie McTell, the Georgia Southern campus, the courthouse and the Statesboro Regional Library.
I hope you will drop by the library soon to view Scott’s folk art design and enjoy the unique pieces of history featured on the eagle.
