Savannah is a charming city full of tons of opportunities for fun and excitement. In between classes, student can take part in a variety of activities throughout the city. The beach at Tybee Island, shopping on Broughton Street, food trucks in Starland Yard, historical tours through the downtown squares…students spending summer in Savannah will not find themselves bored.
Tybee Island is located only 25 miles from the Armstrong campus. Tybee Island is the perfect place to relax after a day of classes. Hit the beach, kayak near the Tybee Island Lighthouse, eat seafood on the oceanfront, or grab something sweet at one of the beachside ice cream parlors. Remember to bring quarters to the parking meters on the island!
At the Wormsloe State Historic Site take a step back in time and visit the ruins of the Wormsloe Estate, home of Noble Jones. Jones arrived in Savannah with Georgia’s founder, James Oglethrope, in 1733. As one of the first settlers, Jones played an important role in the establishment of the colony. the Wormsloe Estate features a small museum where visitors can view some of the historical artifacts found at Wormsloe. The site also features a picnic area and a nature trail which leads visitors through the property, to the ruins, and around the marshes. Wormsloe is a great place for anyone that loves history. Admission to the site is $10.
Located on the route to Tybee Island, Fort Pulaski is another must-see for history buffs! Fort Pulaski, built to defend the Savannah River, has a colorful history. Admire the wildlife and natural surroundings, learn about the fort’s history as a southernmost stop on the Underground Railroad, and explore the fort’s unique architecture – complete with tunnels, spiral staircases, and a drawbridge and moat.
Nature lover? Fort McAllister is the place for you. This state park offers a variety of outdoor recreational activities including biking, fishing, birding, boating, hiking, camping, and fort tours. With its live oaks, Spanish moss, and salt marshes, the park is also an ideal place for picnics and photography. The park offers rental options for bikes, paddleboards, kayaks, and canoes.
Explore a world of art and culture at the three Telfair Museum locations in downtown Savannah. In 1883, the prominent Savannah philanthropist Mary Telfair left her home and all its furnishings and art to the Georgia Historical Society. It was her hope that her home would be turned into a museum to honor the unique history and culture of the city. That hope was certainly realized as the Telfair museums claim the title of the oldest public museum in the South. The three locations work together to provide visitors a comprehensive timeline of the art, history, and architecture of the city of Savannah. The $20 admission covers entry at all three Telfair locations. Don’t forget to bring your Eagle ID for a student discount!
