FYE Research Communities: Online

In today’s global society, students must have every opportunity to be fully prepared for living and working peacefully with others who represent different cultures, languages, and ideologies. The focus for my course will be to engage Georgia Southern first-year students in global issues through foreign films and documentaries, with the goal of inspiring them to pursue their research interests from an international perspective. I intend to incorporate the National Media Literacy Alliance’s (NAMLE) Core Principles of Media Literacy Education (https://namle.net/resources/core-principles/). Students will develop and apply information literacy skills by viewing, analyzing, researching, and discussing select films and documentaries. The Community Read, Trevor Noah’s Born a Crime, will complement this course’s goal to engage in global issues, as it addresses Noah’s personal experience growing up in South Africa and adapting to living in a complex, diverse society. As students heighten their awareness and deepen their knowledge of global issues, they will be encouraged to seek opportunities to become involved in the many campus activities and clubs where they can meet others and learn more about Georgia Southern’s diverse student body.
