The Ph.D. in Applied Computing program at Georgia Southern is designed for graduate students who wish to perform research in the most specialized and advanced areas of fundamental computation, cybersecurity and machine learning. 

Ideal candidates will have a passion for solving important and pressing societal problems through technical innovation and unquenchable curiosity. The program can be highly tailored to the student’s chosen specialization and culminates in a dissertation that must be orally defended before the graduate committee.

What You’ll Learn

Students in the Ph.D. in Applied Computing program will pursue a concentration of study in Computational Foundations, Cybersecurity or Machine Learning  and will perform individualized and group research activities based upon their research advisor’s guidance and consent. A minimum of 18 research credits is required to complete the degree in six semesters. Students will also prepare and orally defend a dissertation as the capstone of their studies.

A sampling of concentration courses includes:

Admission Requirements

For regular admission to the Ph.D. in Applied Computing degree program applicants must:

  • Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or a closely related field (as approved by the graduate program coordinator) at an ABET, or equivalent, accredited college or university.
  • Complete requirements for a master’s degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or a closely related field (as approved by the graduate program coordinator), with a 3.00 (4.0 scale) or equivalent cumulative grade point average or higher on courses in the MS graduate degree program.
  • International students must meet the College of Graduate Studies English Proficiency requirements.

To apply for the Ph.D. in Applied Computing program at Georgia Southern: 

  • Create an application account.

  • Pay the $50 application fee or upload a valid fee waiver once complete. Previous Georgia Southern applicants and dual-enrollment students do not need to pay the fee.
