The Ph.D. in Engineering program at Georgia Southern is designed for graduate students who wish to perform research in the most specialized and advanced areas of civil, mechanical, electrical or manufacturing engineering.
Ideal candidates will have a passion for solving important and pressing societal problems through technical innovation and unquenchable curiosity. The program can be highly tailored to the student’s chosen specialization and culminates in a dissertation that must be orally defended before the graduate committee.

A Ph.D. in Engineering positions you as an expert in your field of research—opening opportunities for advanced roles as a civil, mechanical, electrical or manufacturing engineer; or paving the way for a successful career in academics.
What You’ll Learn
Students in the Ph.D. in Engineering program will pursue a concentration of study in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical or Advanced Manufacturing engineering, and will perform individualized and group research activities based upon their research advisor’s guidance and consent. A minimum of 21 research credits is required to complete the degree in six semesters. Students will also prepare and orally defend a dissertation as the capstone of their studies.

Admission Requirements
For regular admission to the Ph.D. in Engineering degree program applicants must:
- Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, ManufacturingEngineering or a closely related field (as approved by the graduate program coordinator) at an ABET, or equivalent, accredited college or university.
- Complete requirements for a master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, ManufacturingEngineering or a closely related field (as approved by the graduate program coordinator), with a 3.00 (4.0 scale) or equivalent cumulative grade point average or higher on courses in the MS graduate degree program.
- International students must meet the College of Graduate Studies English Proficiency requirements.
