Sharing Ideas to Improve Student Learning

Georgia Southern University’s Center for Teaching, Learning and Scholarship (CTLS) will welcome educators from across the United States and around the world for the sixth annual Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Commons Conference on March 27-29 at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm Street, in Savannah.

“SoTL is an international momentum to improve student learning through evidence-based research that is applied to actual learning contexts,” said Alan Altany, Ph.D., director of the CTLS. “It enables faculty and students to work together for the common purpose of deepening and expanding the learning experiences of students.” Organizers say the conference is a catalyst for learning, conversations and collaborations, and allows faculty to support one another and share research on how their students can best learn. “The SoTL Commons Conference is an appreciation of the competent, scholarly faculty in higher education who seek the best learning experiences for their students and are willing, even eager, to explore how best to create opportunities for such learning to occur,” said Altany. Speakers for the conference include Dan Bernstein, professor of psychology and director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of  Kansas, Lynn Taylor, vice-provost for teaching and learning at the University of Calgary and Brian Coppola, Ph.D., professor of chemistry at the University of Michigan.
