Center for Sustainability Goes Green for GreenFest 2014

The Georgia Southern University Center for Sustainability (CfS) is preparing for a full day of “going green” during its second annual GreenFest on Saturday, Oct. 4 at the Bulloch County Courthouse lawn, 2 N. Main St., from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. The event is dedicated to encouraging a green community and making greener choices. “We hope that visitors will learn that it’s easier than they might think to make green choices,” said Lissa Leege, Ph.D., director of the Center for Sustainability. “We have the technology to reduce energy and water use and can make the choice to reduce waste and eat sustainably grown food.” This year the CfS will feature three workshops to help transition into a greener lifestyle. The workshops are Green Your Gameday – Sustainable Tailgating, Green Your Lunchbox and Create Your Own Worm Compost Bin. “We hope to match consumers up with the resources and solutions that will help them save green while going green,” said Leege. “Visitors will learn about how to get a free low-flow shower head or rebate on a low-flow commode from the City of Statesboro’s Department of Water and Wastewater.” In addition to the workshops, the CfS and volunteers from student organizations and biology and nutrition classes will host exhibits and activities for the community. Some of those activities include live music by Pladd Dot’s School of Rock and green storytelling by the Statesboro Regional Library. Guests will also be able to ride electric go-carts courtesy of the Clubhouse, view recycled packaging from Pratt Industries, see an electric car from Nissan and learn about Georgia Southern’s Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art’s Moth project.
