Georgia Southern University Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Avinandan “Avi” Mukherjee, Ph.D., has been elected to the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ (APLU) Council on Academic Affairs Executive Committee.

Mukherjee was elected to the committee’s Class of 2029 and will serve through the conclusion of the APLU Annual Meeting in November 2029.

The Council on Academic Affairs (CAA) brings together provosts and other chief academic officers from APLU member institutions to address issues shaping public higher education. Its work encompasses teaching and learning innovation, academic programs and planning, faculty roles and rewards, research and publication, funding and budget strategies, and universities’ broader public mission. The council also advises the APLU Council of Presidents and Board of Directors on association priorities in these areas.

The CAA Executive Committee leads the work of the council in collaboration with APLU’s Office of Academic Affairs. Its responsibilities include organizing council meetings and programming, overseeing activities related to faculty affairs, conducting elections and developing working groups focused on emerging issues in higher education. Executive Committee members also serve as liaisons to other APLU councils and commissions.

“It is an honor to be elected by my peers to serve on the Council on Academic Affairs Executive Committee,” Mukherjee said. “Public universities are navigating significant changes in how we educate students, support faculty, advance research and serve our communities. I look forward to collaborating with academic leaders from across the country, sharing the work underway at Georgia Southern and bringing new ideas and perspectives back to our University.”

Mukherjee’s appointment also creates an opportunity for Georgia Southern to play a direct role in one of the council’s upcoming gatherings. The CAA will hold its summer meeting July 19-21, 2027, at Georgia Southern University in Savannah.

As provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, Mukherjee serves as Georgia Southern’s chief academic officer and provides leadership for the University’s academic enterprise. His work includes advancing academic excellence, student success, faculty achievement, research and innovation, and the University’s commitment to serving communities across Georgia and beyond.

The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities is a membership organization representing public research universities, land-grant institutions, university systems and affiliated organizations. Through its councils and commissions, APLU convenes university leaders to exchange ideas, develop strategies and advance the role and impact of public higher education.
