Faculty at Georgia Southern University are mentoring undergraduate students from around the southeast this summer as they spend 10 weeks on the Statesboro Campus conducting research as part of the CollaborativE Multidisciplinary Investigations Through Undergraduate Research Experiences (CEMITURE). The CEMITURE site at Georgia Southern is an award from the Division of Chemistry of the National Science Foundation and allows participants to work directly with University faculty mentors on their respective research projects. Students receive a $5,000 stipend and housing and meal plan. Projects range from chemistry, biology, engineering to toxicology and materials science. The program also includes professional development workshops for enhancing participants’ career preparation, scientific communication, leadership and ethics. CEMITURE is designed so that participants can build a community of scholars with their peers and Georgia Southern faculty, enhance their preparation for future success in graduate programs, cultivate their knowledge and expertise in science to make significant contributions to their own communities and the wider society, and gain a global perspective of STEM fields. Kayley Yates, a student at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama, will study molecular sensors under the direction of Karelle Aiken, Ph.D. Yates is from Jacksonville, Texas. Glory Onajobi, a student at Emory University in Atlanta, will study transition metal clusters under the direction of Arpita Saha, Ph.D. Onajobi is from New Carrollton, Maryland. Ivan Cockman, a student at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, will study palladium nanoparticles under the direction of Beverly Penland, Ph.D. Cockman is from North Carolina.
