January 2026: Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College officially consolidate

Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College (EGSC) have consolidated to form a single, unified university that builds upon the strengths, traditions and missions of both campuses, effective Jan. 1, 2026.

EGSC and its campuses will be known as the Georgia Southern University – East Georgia campuses. Installation of signage reflecting the new institution name has begun on the East Georgia campus in Swainsboro and will continue throughout the spring semester.

The East Georgia campus locations will maintain their open access mission and continue to provide multiple entry points for students, while expanding pathways, enhancing academic support, and offering a more seamless student experience across our campuses.

Led by President Kyle Marrero, the consolidated institution will expand educational opportunities for students, enhance support services, and strengthen the long-term sustainability of both institutions—all while continuing to drive economic and workforce development across the  region.

Since the Board of Regents first announced in April that the two institutions would unite, Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College teams have worked diligently and collaboratively to bring this vision to life, guided by the shared commitment to student success, academic excellence, and service to the region.

“Over the past several months, Consolidation Action Teams, composed of more than 150 faculty, staff and administrators from both institutions and University System of Georgia (USG) personnel, have provided essential insight into how the consolidated university should operate,” said Marrero. “Their recommendations have shaped everything from academic alignment and student services to administrative processes and campus operations. Recognizing the work that is still ahead, I want to express my sincere gratitude to every member of the Georgia Southern and East Georgia communities. You came together with a unified purpose, and I am incredibly proud of the thoughtful, collaborative work that has brought us to this moment.”

Following approval by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), the Board of Regents of the USG approved the institutions to move forward as one consolidated university under the Georgia Southern University name. This action affirms that the combined institution meets the required standards of quality and readiness and formally allows for the next steps toward full operational integration.
