Mission
The Center for Forensic Sciences is committed to transforming forensic science education and research, becoming the premier destination for both traditional and adult learners. By fostering collaboration, embracing experiential learning and driving innovative research, the Center aims to elevate standards in the field to strengthen community safety in Southeast Georgia and beyond.
Vision
As a leader in forensic science education and research, the Center will empower learners through collaborative, hands-on experiences that span academia, government and industry. Innovative research opportunities will provide avenues to enhance evidentiary analytical techniques. Pushing the boundaries of knowledge, innovative, critical-thinking leaders in forensic sciences will be formed who are ready to address tough challenges while contributing to the safety and well-being of our region.
Expert Knowledge for Real Cases
Complex investigations demand more than standard procedures; they require deep, highly specialized scientific knowledge. The Center for Forensic Sciences bridges this gap by embedding Georgia Southern’s expert faculty directly into the investigative process. We work side-by-side with agencies, ranging from local police departments to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, providing the precise technical insights and analytical breakthroughs needed to find critical answers.
Research that Makes a Difference
Our work goes beyond supporting active investigations. We develop and test new forensic methods designed for practical use in the field when existing techniques fall short. Through interdisciplinary, externally funded projects, we create and validate new approaches to analyzing evidence, ensuring scientific advances are quickly turned into usable, real-world tools that respond to evolving investigative needs.
Training Tomorrow’s Investigators
Students are central to our mission. Through comprehensive education ranging from undergraduate concentrations to advanced degrees, students work alongside faculty to conduct hands-on laboratory and field research. They also step into the field through internships with government and industry partners, working directly with practicing forensic scientists to gain experience in casework and lab procedures. This powerful combination of rigorous research and real-world training gives our graduates a critical step up, preparing them to enter the workforce with practical skills they can apply on day one.
Upgraded Skills for Practicing Professionals
The Center offers applied training programs for professionals already working in forensic science and law enforcement. Training sessions focus on practical skills, updated methods and current research that can be used immediately in casework. Designed to address real needs in the field, this training emphasizes techniques that improve accuracy, consistency and decision-making in forensic analysis. By connecting professionals with university expertise, we ensure everyday forensic practice keeps pace with scientific and technological advances.
A Foundation of Trust
Over the past two decades, CFS Interim Director Ed Mondor, Ph.D., the only forensic entomologist in Georgia, has assisted in death investigations by analyzing insect evidence. The Center for Forensic Sciences builds on this trusted foundation, expanding our partnerships to agencies across the Southeast and providing direct access to specialized faculty for any investigative need.
“I want Georgia Southern to be the first call law enforcement makes when they need help with a case. No matter the field, we have the expertise to get the job done.” — Ed Mondor, Ph.D.
