Dr. Michael Huggins serves as Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University and Professor of Biochemistry, Chemistry and Physics. He joined Georgia Southern in 2023 and provides strategic leadership for academic programs, research initiatives, and student success efforts across the College.
A chemist by training, Dr. Huggins’s scholarly work centers on organic chemistry, with particular emphasis on NMR spectroscopy, supramolecular chemistry, organic synthesis, and molecular structure elucidation. His research has contributed to advances in understanding hydrogen bonding, pyrrole-based systems, fluorescent chromophores, and related molecular architectures, and has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Physical Chemistry A, Journal of Chemical Education, Tetrahedron, Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, and Journal of Organic Chemistry.
Dr. Huggins’s work supports global goals in quality education by advancing chemical knowledge and mentoring students in research and discovery. As Dean, he is committed to fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding research opportunities, and preparing graduates in the sciences and mathematics to address complex challenges in Georgia and beyond.
