Students in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) are bringing awareness to the importance of handwashing in accordance with Global Handwashing Day, which is Oct. 15. The students are in a Global Health Policy class taught by Associate Professor of Health Policy and Management, Bill Mase, DrPH, who said knowing proper hand-washing techniques is crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Georgia Southern University’s College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and College of Education have partnered to host a nontraditional research podcast, “Who Cares? Casual Conversations with Southern Scholars.” The podcast, which debuted on Sept. 24, focuses on the impact that University research is making on our communities.
Assistant Professor Casey Keck, Ph.D., and Associate Professor April Garrity, Ph.D., faculty members in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, have received a $6,449 grant to investigate the ability of graduate students in the Communications Sciences and Disorders program to write and implement functional communication goals in the program’s teaching clinic, the RiteCare Center. Garrity and Keck will use the grant money, which was awarded by the Georgia Southern University’s Faculty Research Committee, to fund an undergraduate research assistant, collaborate with a biostatistician, purchase clinical testing tools and provide monetary incentives to participants for their willingness to partake in the research.…
Georgia Southern University’s famed Center for Wildlife Education Center and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center will reopen Monday, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m. Closed since the pandemic hit in March, workers have used the time to refurbish many areas of the center and finish a new observation deck at the waterfowl exhibit. Visitors will be able to enter the enclosure and view 125 ducks representing 16 species, the largest collection of waterfowl in Georgia.

Students studying nuclear medicine in the Waters College of Health Professions at Georgia Southern University will have access to a state-of-the-art piece of equipment after a donation from Biodex Medical Systems. The Department of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Sciences received a dose calibrator from Biodex Medical Systems in August. Valued at $8,000, the equipment is used in all nuclear medicine departments in health care. “Every dosage of a nuclear medicine radiopharmaceutical must be measured using this piece of equipment prior to administering the radiopharmaceutical to a patient,” said Rochelle Lee, Ed.D., nuclear medicine program director who helped secure the donation thanks…
The Psychology Clinic on the Georgia Southern University Statesboro Campus will provide free dementia screenings and psychotherapy for caregivers thanks to a $10,000 donation from Rockin’ Out Alzheimer’s Disease (ROAD). The services will be provided in person and virtually.
