The Mechanical Services Department at Georgia Southern University is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and energy systems across campus. Our team ensures safe, reliable, and efficient facilities that support the learning environment for students, faculty, and staff.
Mechanical Superintendent – Justin Cameron (Statesboro Campus)
Control Systems
Our building automation systems are managed by trusted providers: Johnson Controls Inc. on the Statesboro campus and Siemens Controls on the Armstrong campus.
These automation systems allow us to monitor and control:
- Equipment status
- Hot water and chilled water temperatures
- Discharge air temperatures
- Relative humidity
- Airflow and pressures
This technology is a critical component in creating a comfortable, energy-efficient, and sustainable campus environment.
Electrical Services
The Electrical Shop operates, maintains, and repairs building electrical systems to include:
- Lighting systems
- Power distribution
- Fire alarm systems
- Emergency power
Our skilled team ensures all electrical services meet the highest safety and reliability standards.
Supervisor – Mike Markovcic
Energy Management
The Energy Management Department oversees energy usage and sustainability efforts across campus. Our Energy Manager collaborates on construction projects to ensure that all systems are efficient, reliable, and cost-effective.
Through our Building Automation System (BAS), we have implemented a load shedding program that reduces energy consumption in two stages once campus power thresholds are reached. This process optimizes usage, reduces costs, and ensures energy reliability for critical facilities.
Energy Manager – Steve Watkins
HVAC Services
The HVAC Shop manages all heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, ensuring optimal performance and comfort across campus buildings. Services include operation, repair, and preventative maintenance for equipment such as:
- Cooling towers and chillers
- Boilers and pumps
- Motors and air handling units
- Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
Preventative maintenance helps extend equipment life, reduce downtime, and improve energy efficiency.
Supervisor – Justin Cameron
Plumbing Services
The Plumbing Shop maintains and repairs essential campus water systems, including:
- Storm and sewer systems
- Domestic water supply
- Lift stations
- Plumbing fixtures
On the Statesboro campus, 95% of domestic water is managed directly by Facilities Services, supported by two deep wells and a 300,000-gallon water tower on Plant Drive. This ensures a reliable, sustainable water supply for the university community.
