Security Tips

Georgia Southern University is committed to keeping our students, faculty, and staff safe. By following a few simple precautions, you can reduce your risk and feel more secure whether you’re walking across campus, attending an event, or returning home after dark.

Walking & Travel Safety

  • Avoid walking alone at night. Travel in pairs or groups whenever possible.
  • Stick to well-lit paths and always scan your surroundings.
  • Use the LiveSafe App to share your location or invite a friend to walk you home.
  • Request a Public Safety escort if you feel unsafe.
  • Break your routine by taking different routes occasionally.

Situational Awareness

  • Carry your keys in hand before reaching your door or vehicle.
  • Let friends or roommates know where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Don’t stay behind at parties or events—leave with your group.
  • Avoid jogging alone, and never jog with earbuds that block awareness. Jog in pairs when possible.

Protecting Yourself & Your Belongings

  • Consider taking a self-defense class to feel more confident.
  • Do not leave personal items (electronics, laptops, tablets, bikes) unattended without securing or locking them.
  • Record and store the serial numbers of your devices and valuables in a safe location.
  • Always lock your doors when you are home and when you leave.
  • Never open the door unless you know the person on the other side.

When to Call for Help

  • Report suspicious activity or individuals who do not belong in your residential area.
  • Contact University Public Safety or call 911 immediately if you feel threatened.
