Georgia Southern gives back to local communities through Treasure Savannah and alumni service projects

On Sept. 22, almost 300 Georgia Southern University students, faculty and staff joined to volunteer for Treasure Savannah, the biannual day of service on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah and Liberty Campus in Hinesville.

Center for Social Gerontology hosts its third annual Social Gerontology Community Conference

Georgia Southern University’s Center of Social Gerontology will host its third annual Social Gerontology Community Conference at the Nessmith-Lane Center in Statesboro on Oct. 12. This one-day conference is designed to help professionals working in the field of aging to learn about best practices in supporting the needs of older adults and their caregivers. Presentations focus on issues such as end-of-life care, professional practice, older adult living, caregiving, mental health care, and Alzheimer’s Disease and older forms of Dementia. Older adults and caregivers are also encouraged to attend. Students will be given the opportunity to network with professionals in the field.

Georgia Southern’s Armstrong Visiting Writers Series to host reading with acclaimed poet

Georgia Southern University’s biannual Armstrong Visiting Writers Series will host a reading by acclaimed poet and 2017 National Book Critics Circle Award finalist James Longenbach for its Fall 2018 event. The reading will take place at Savannah Coffee Roasters, located at 215 W. Liberty St. in downtown Savannah, on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

Georgia Southern University Police Department’s K9, “Bear”, will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Bear’s vest is sponsored by Optima Energy, Inc. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Optima Energy”. Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.
