Georgia Southern’s Urban Education Endorsement is an opportunity to make a significant difference in a diverse sector of education. This fully-online program consists of three courses that introduce candidates to foundational and current scholarship on culturally relevant pedagogies. Coursework also entails field experience engaging with youth and families in urban communities, as well as the development of curriculum for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.

Through this program, you will be able to build multi-faceted understandings of urban contexts, as well as utilize culturally relevant pedagogies. You will explore new ways to empower students by leveraging both informal and formal educational resources for urban settings.

Of particular importance is understanding how multiple sociocultural factors lead to challenges that urban students may face in the classroom. By carefully attending to the overlap of economic, domestic, linguistic and racial dynamics, you will become more equipped to meet students’ needs in an informed manner.

This endorsement offers candidates a high level of flexibility. With only 9 credit hours that are fully online, the program can be completed quickly and in a manner that fits your schedule.

Graduate Level Admissions Requirements

The application and all ​​required documents listed on the “admissions requirements” tab​ for the program must be received by the deadline. If all required documents are not received by the deadline, your application will not be considered for admission.

Follow these steps to complete the Georgia Southern application: 

  1. Complete requirements for a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by an appropriate institutional accreditor.
  2. Possess or be eligible for a renewable Georgia level 4 teaching certificate or possess an equivalent out-of-state teaching certificate. Candidates who have completed all requirements for the Georgia level 4 teaching certificate have until the end of the first semester to obtain their certificate. Candidates with an out-of-state certificate will not receive Georgia certification upon program completion.
  3. Submit a completed “Disclosure and Affirmation Form” that addresses misconduct disclosure, the Code of Ethics for Educators and tort liability insurance.

Other Program Requirements

Urban Education Endorsement courses must be taken in sequence with candidates earning a “C” or better to continue in the program.

Note: International transcripts must be evaluated by a NACES accredited evaluation service and must be a course by course evaluation and include a GPA.
